Vision to Reality: Creative Living Options for the Next Generation
Seniors demand environments and services that support lifestyle, enhance experience, maintain vitality, and offer more and better choices. They are reinventing aging and retirement in an effort to maintain their vitality -- so how are you reinventing your housing options to accommodate the new
senior? From vision to reality, the panel will explore a compendium of new housing products and designs that provide creative living options for the next generation of seniors. The discussion will highlight unique living options such as Cohousing and Mixed-use Housing from across the world,
and how design can create agelessness in our environment.
Beyond the Front Door: An Evaluation of the Household Model
The Household Model, and all of its variations, with its emphasis on creating home for smaller groups of residents in an environment supported by dedicated and versatile caregivers, has arguably become the greatest single transformation driver in long-term care today. This session
will explore and demonstrate the advantages and disadvantages of various models based upon post-occupancy evaluations of multiple Households at several communities. Presenters will also explore the seven key components of the Household Model.
Don’t Forget to Remember: Research and Design Behind Dementia Households
This session will examine what some spaces are “forgetting to remember” when designing for dementia households and how the integration of dementia research, architecture, interior and
exterior spaces can promote social interaction, generate spontaneous activities, and increase staff efficiency. The presenters will review a range of designs for dementia households—highlighting which design and operational strategies are effective (and those that are not).
The Big Boom Theory: What the Boomer Consumer Wants
Understanding Boomer Consumers’ mind-set, lifestyles and life stages is the best way to plan for their impact on services, housing and design. This panel discussion, by several of the nation’s leading marketing professionals, will focus on the group’s findings during tours of prominent communities
with future prospective residents (all in their 60s and early 70s). What some of these younger seniors are saying may surprise you, but will be valuable to your community as you look for
ways to meet their needs.
If We Build It, Will They Come? The Right Project for the Right Market
As the U.S. economy turns around, and the senior living industry comes to terms with a “new reality,” the need for affordable, quality senior housing options will grow. In addition, variable market needs driven by changing demographics, local economics, and consumer preferences will require unique product offerings and flexible pay options, often on a single campus. This session will provide case study data on these unique markets, discuss sources and uses of financing, and seek a better understanding of the essential needs and wants of these consumers.

Finding Vitality: The Myths & Truths of Wellness
Seniors “Engaged in Life” are no longer aging passively. They will continue to seek environments and services that support an active lifestyle, enhance experiences, offer more choices and, most importantly, maintain a healthy, long life. This thought-provoking session by some of the nation’s foremost visionaries and original thinkers takes a comprehensive look at the lifestyle and well-being of today’s older adults. Learn about the latest
research and trends in aging and their impact on how wellness programs are integrated into senior living communities. Although wellness and fitness is perhaps the most important component of vitality, it is not the only one. This session will also highlight the best programs that truly engage residents and serve as the “heartbeat” of a senior’s campus, offering more cultural, wellness, and activity options to residents and the surrounding community.
Seniors Design 104Real: Getting Real in a Virtual World (Bonus Session)
104Real is our fourth session in our ongoing educational series dedicated to Design for Seniors. This year, we will get “real” by utilizing the virtual world, including “avatars” to “e-valuate” the design, details, and sensitivities that allow us to support seniors and promote their independence. Successful design is in the details, and this session will explore how the virtual world can be used to effectively create state-of-the-art living environments for seniors.
