Client Quote
"The SFCS/Hillier team worked with Virginia Tech to design a landmark facility that blends gracefully with the university's well defined campus style. Built from the university's beloved 'hokie stone,' a Virginia limestone cut from the institution's own quarry, this state of the art hotel, conference, and alumni center announces the visual lexicon for alumni and campus visitors. The complex, a sophisticated interpretation of collegiate gothic, speaks 'campus and contemplation' time and again."

Narrative
SFCS, in association with The Hillier Group, began assisting Virginia Tech in the planning process for this new alumni center, conference center, and hotel in the summer of 1997. The completed program study recommended three key components for this hallmark facility.
The Holtzman Alumni Center houses an entry/reception area known as the "Grand Hall," a board room, special collections library, museum, and a multimedia conference hall that will be shared with the Conference Center. Its paved terrace adds more space for outside events. An office suite for the Virginia Tech Alumni Association and associated staff is also included.
The Skelton Conference Center component includes a banquet hall that will seat up to 800 people and a large pre-function space with a view of the alumni lawn. Additional dining facilities include a 60-seat restaurant, two 20-seat private dining salons, and a cafe, all supported by banquet food service facilities. A "Great Lawn" will be used for outdoor functions. The inside function and outside lawn spaces together will be able to accommodate more than 5,000 people.
The hotel that forms the third component of the complex features 141 guest rooms, six executive suites, and fitness/wellness facilities. The rooms are decorated in imaginative variations of Virginia Tech maroon and burnt orange, and feature works by local artists.
Ground was broken for the project in April 2003. Construction was completed on the Inn and Conference Center in July 2005, and on the Alumni Center in September 2005.
The Alumni Complex is a Virginia HECOM project.
