Narrative
Originally constructed in 1986, the Governor’s School for Science and Technology was the first facility of its kind in the country, focusing on physics, biology, and math. In 1997, the school determined major renovations were needed to update educational programs. SFCS worked with Governor's School representatives to develop a new educational master plan that included state-of-the-art math, chemistry, biochemistry, materials science, engineering and computer engineering programs. SFCS then prepared design documents for the renovation and expansion of the building.
The renovation included an advanced chemistry lab, computer lab, engineering labs and new classrooms. Office and prep room spaces were created to support the labs.
The expansion included an addition housing four math labs, a new biology lab, a 150-person multimedia lecture hall, a reference library, and an administration suite. Student gathering spaces and an expanded lobby, where student work could be exhibited, were incorporated.
Data networks, internet, cable and satellite systems and safeguarding systems were provided throughout the facility.
Serving over 200 students from seven area school systems, the Governor’s School is again at the forefront of science and technology education for gifted students.
