Narrative
Virginia Baptist Homes became SFCS’s first senior living client in 1945, and our service to Virginia Baptist Homes continues today—a relationship spanning over sixty years. We planned Virginia Baptist Homes’ three existing continuing care retirement communities, and are now either planning for or have recently completed major repositionings of each: Culpeper Baptist Retirement Community, Inc., Culpeper; Lakewood Manor, Richmond; and The Chesapeake, Newport News.
SFCS is also designing The Glebe, Virginia Baptist Homes’ new startup community in southwest Virginia.
The Glebe is a new continuing care retirement community located on a rolling 65-acre site—formerly an apple orchard—in the scenic foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains near Roanoke. The initial phase, now complete, includes independent living apartments, cottages, assisted living units, a health care center, and a community center.
SFCS designed seven apartment styles, ranging from 739 to 1,555 square feet. Apartments feature nine foot high ceilings, ample closets, and a patio or balcony. Some include second bedrooms, dens, and/or formal dining rooms.
Cottages are sited to take maximum advantage of mountain views through large windows. Four styles of cottages offer one-story living, ranging in size up to 1,765 square feet, including multiple bedrooms and bathrooms, one or more porches, and an attached two-car garage.
The community center provides a library, gift shop, and spaces for “traditional” seniors’ activities such as crafts and playing cards. Other spaces reflect the expanding needs and interests of today’s seniors: The Glebe offers a cultural center, a resident business and computer center, and a bank. Dining options include fine restaurant-style dining, a casual cafe, and a private dining room. Walking trails, a fitness center, community gardens, and a clinic promote wellness.
The assisted living center and health care center feature private rooms with private bathrooms and individual climate control, pleasing common gathering/activity spaces, and a dedicated dining room.
A projected expansion will add a pool and locker rooms, a memory support wing, and additional assisted living beds, health care beds, and independent living apartments. The master plan also calls for additional cottages.
