Narrative
Westminster Canterbury of Lynchburg has been home to some of the most active seniors in central Virginia for more than twenty years. Residents have developed a wildlife habitat to attract birds and butterflies, but to remain attractive to prospective residents this LifeCare community was in need of much more.
Westminster Canterbury began a repositioning in the late 1990s with an all-encompassing strategic plan for the expansion of services, community spaces, and housing options. The sponsors challenged SFCS's architectural and engineering team, who designed the original campus, to integrate significant new features, yet minimize the disruption to operations and resident lifestyles.
The new lobby is spacious and welcoming, with views to distant horse pastures. Community spaces now accommodate a wider range of activities, including a new billiards room, a computer lab with high-speed Internet access, and two woodworking shops. Glass curtain-walls bring in natural light. The main dining room was carved into three distinctive dining venues, reducing noise and increasing choice. Topping it all off, a rooftop terrace encourages gardening and outdoor relaxation.
SFCS designed a new wellness center with an indoor pool and fitness area. Use of the wellness center is a key benefit of the Canterbury Club, a membership program which enables non-resident seniors to experience the community's appealing lifestyle.
New luxury apartments and expanded existing units feature large balconies/patios, modern amenities, and a variety of floor plans.
An Eden atrium connects a new memory support household to the assisted living building. The addition offers safe and comfortable surroundings to Alzheimer's residents, who now enjoy a secure enclosed garden, sunroom, and activity areas.
