Westminster-Canterbury of the Blue Ridge
Charlottesville, VA
Opened in 1990, Westminster-Canterbury of the Blue Ridge is a continuing care retirement community located on a sloping mountaintop campus with views of Monticello. In 1995, a health center expansion added an innovative household to serve the memory-impaired resident, encouraging mobility and social interaction, as well as staff efficiency. In 1996, SFCS completed and began to implement a new master plan. The multi-purpose room/chapel has operable partitions to subdivide the space and is topped with a large dome and oculus, after Jefferson's designs. In the existing community building, the original dining and multi-purpose rooms made way for a new library and expanded kitchen. The gift shop, grille, and arts/crafts were relocated and expanded. The new community building links the new four-story apartment building to the existing commons. The independent living units feature two bedroom and two bedroom/den designs, with high ceilings, fireplaces, multiple exposures, and crown molding.
