Westminster Canterbury Shenandoah Valley

SFCS worked with Shenandoah Valley Westminster Canterbury (SVWC)on an updated campus master plan in 2017 to enhance program offerings and respond to market trends for Independent Living. When 22 acres of adjacent property became available in 2018, plans were set in motion to acquire the land and expand the campus with upscale and unique villas.

The villas at SVWC overlook scenic ponds, woodlands, and meadows for picturesque living. Completed at the end of 2024, the neighborhood includes ten hybrid apartment homes with a total of 97 residences that will position the community well for many years to come.

Each Villa building includes nine or ten residences with a community room for gatherings, patios or balconies, and personal garage spaces with EV charger access.

Various massing concepts were required to effectively integrate each villa into the steep terrain. Expanses of one and two-story stone-faced structural retaining walls were constructed to accommodate the residential apartments and provide adequate grade-level parking and garage access.

Finally, the design team had to find creative ways to meet the owner’s marketing and aesthetic expectations while working within the maximum building height limitations of the local city and county zoning ordinances.
